Journal Entry: Mon Dec 18, 2006, 4:37 PM
My name is LaTaivia Calhoun. I am a 15 year old sophomore attending Northwestern high school. Scince age 13 by reading just one Japanese comic book the Japanese culture and language has completely consumed me. In 2008 I would like to be on the departure plane in L.A. to Japan. I am very interested in studying abroad in Japan.
I am a dedicated student who works hard to get where I want to be. I was told that if I wanted to go to a certain country I should research that country before considering. Every Japanese related book in the public library has been read at least twice. That’s how dedicated I am. Who wouldn't want to help someone who is hard working and dedicated to experience education in another country? I always pray for 2 things: a good healthy life and to live in Japan.
Upon writing this letter my mother asked me "why do I want to study abroad? How do you want to immerse yourself? How will you finance your experience? When do you want to go abroad? And Why Japan?”
These questions were easy to answer. I wanted to study abroad because Japan has always been apart of my life. Japan was the country that encouraged me to read even more than I did as a child and is still encouraging me today. I use to tell all my family members that one day I would live in Japan and now that that opportunity has come around I want to finally achieve my ultimate goal and dream.
I want to fully immerse myself. I want to come home after a year and be surprised of how different the two worlds I’ve lived in are.
I will finance my experience by starting fundraisers, getting a part-time job, earning many abroad scholarships, writing donation letters too many companies, and doing small errands for family and friends.
In junior high school a friend of mine nicknamed me Miss Japan because I was always talking about Japan. I in return named her Miss France because she was interested in the French language at the time. As time goes on miss France started to loose her nickname because she was slowly loosing interest in where she wanted to be. In the end my constant need of Japanese knowledge just kept growing. I want to know every bit of the Japanese culture.
In 2008 I would like to be on the departure plane in L.A. to Japan to completely immerse myself in the Japanese culture for an entire year. With one year to raise a little over $10,000 I would like to request donations or helpful ideas to help finance my intercultural experiences.
